Political discussions continue.

While WURFL, Device Atlas, etc. are all great resources for very specific capability profiling...we've found that turning the problem upside down made much more sense and delivered faster, better results.

The key thing that most developers seem to be trying to do is to identify if a user IS using a specific Mobile Device.

The problem with this is that the User Agent strings on Mobile Devices are inconsistent at best...and completely useless or even non-existent at worst.

Once you accept this the inverse answer becomes clear.

PC browsers are much more reliable and consistent in identifying the Operating System they belong to. Also, there is only a small handful off Operating Systems you need to detect. So this is how our solution works.

We call this !device-detection ("Not Device" Detection).

If your User Agent isn't one of the following Operating Systems:

- Windows
- Macintosh/Mac OSX
- Linux
- FreeBSD
- Solaris
- (Add niche OSes here)

And your User Agent doesn't contain one of the following strings:

- bot
- slurp
- spider
- crawl

Then you are almost guaranteed to be on a Mobile Device.

Within this group you can then also clearly identify the important groups that are consistent:

- iPhone/iPod Touch
- Windows Mobile

We have implemented this method for two major Telco's a major Insurance company, our leading edge Mobile Payment service and our own web projects. This is a strategy that has proven to be very effective and only requires a simple set of regular expressions in the form of Apache mod_rewrite directives that can work in either Apache or IIS.

We also couple this with a simple design pattern that provides a link from the Mobile site back to the PC site just in case we accidentally mis-classify a user. After all they should be able to ask for the full PC version if they really want it.

We've also recently put together a case-study that looks at some well known large corporations in Australia to see how they are or are NOT handling automatic device detection. The results are very surprising.

Now we thought it's time we shared this strategy in order to broaden the on-going device detection discussion.

作り方は簡単で、100円ショップ（この場合はダイソー）にて双眼鏡を購入。
その後、対物レンズ（大きい方のレンズで接眼レンズではない方）を強引に取り出します。

そこにキリで穴をあけ、いらないマスコット付きのストラップのマスコットを外してレンズにかえるだけです。
ジュースのおまけのストラップと100円ショップの双眼鏡なので、値段も250円でできました。
しかも、そこそこ寄れていい絵が撮れます。

何故、イカ？すみません…。これが1番寄れてる感が出てたので…。

日本ではまだ未発売ですが、Griffin Technologyから発売されているClarifiというケースがあります。
このケースはなんとマクロレンズ付きということで欲しくて欲しくてしょうがありません。

ケースとしてもかなり、かっこいい。
はやく日本で発売されることを願うのみです。

Global shipments of PCs rose 15% in the third quarter, according to the market-research firm Gartner, but much of the growth came from low-profit, Internet-centric PCs that often sell for under $500. While Gartner said it was hard to pinpoint the market penetration of low-cost PCs, their strong growth contributed to Hewlett-Packard's relinquishing its market lead in Europe, Africa and the Middle East for the first time since 2002. Makers of the handy dandy Flip Video camcorder have partnered with CafePress to create a new online marketplace to allow designers market their own cigarette pack-sized Flip Mino cameras. Sharp will launch in Japan next month the Aquos DX, an LCD HDTV that the company is calling the first to have a built-in Blu-ray player. The model, which will be offered in a number of sizes, features an integrated HDTV tuner, speakers mounted on the bottom and a Blu-ray player that wraps around the back and side of the screen. With cable TV providers and others offering an increasing amount of their content in high definition, many consumers are opting not to buy Blu-ray disc players, according to this report. But with the holidays approaching, consumer-electronics firms such as Sony and Samsung are offering Blu-ray players with rock-bottom retail entry points in hopes of wooing consumers to the format. InFocus, which once developed state-of-the-art video projectors for office and institutional use, has come out with the X9 DLP, a home-theater projector with native 720p resolution and VGA and HDMI connectors. The unit retails for $1,099 and, according to InFocus product marketing director Benjamin Joy, enables home viewers to "enjoy watching sports or entertainment in a stunning 100-inch image." I got swept up in the hoopla as well and purchased the original iPhone. I was amazed how easy it was to register and activate the iPhone through iTunes. I also very quickly got acclimated to the touch screen and many functional icons that offered access to the phone, email, sms text messaging, web browser, weather, YouTube, iPod, calendar and more. The digital camera was also of high quality and with the integrated email and sms it was very easy to share photos with your friends and family. I loved the iPhone.

For me there were a few glaring issues though with the iPhone. First was the fact that the iPhone operated on an older network platform which was sub par. The second was the lack of integration with my company's email that my Blackberry performed so well. Email speed and efficiency is so important to me I had to go back to the Blackberry for productivity purposes. The third was the power of the battery and its ability to support the iPhone under heavy use.

I have watched the evolution of the iPhone and recently jumped back to try it again. I am so delighted that the new email integration has allowed a seamless integration with my companies Exchange server. In addition, there is now an opportunity to upgrade to a new iPhone that supports the AT&T 3G network. Also, third party developers have also built new applications for the iPhone to expand the functionality greatly on the iPhone. I stepped up to the new 3G phone and can attest to it's increased speed. I love the applications as well - I can now access my LinkedIn and Digg accounts, and hundreds of other apps, right from my iPhone.

The only question for me is that I am not sure if the battery can hold up to my heavy use as of yet but it looks like this generation of iPhone's has a more powerful battery. Time will tell on this point.

Ask anyone who I have worked with over the years - ask my kids - they will all tell you that I have been a Blackberry addict. I am very glad to now have my new iPhone as it brings everything I had with the Blackberry and so much more. I am thinking that I should check out these new Apple PC's now.
