The South Florida Wakeboarding Association (SFWA) is excited to announce the second annual “Pros and Joes” wakeboarding/wakeskating contest to be held on November 15th and 16th, 2008 at Okeeheelee Park, 7715 Forest Hill Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL 33413.

The event is designed to give amateur riders in South Florida the opportunity to not only meet pro-level wakeboarders and wakeskaters but to ride with them as well. It is also a “coming out” event, so to speak, that will be the first step in making Palm Beach County relevant in wake related sports. The SFWA is dedicated to this purpose and our intention is to make this a family event that will attract both hard-core wake enthusiasts and the casual observers. It will be an all-day, two day event starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and lasting until roughly 6 p.m. on Sunday. The event will be marketed aggressively and we expect a large crowd throughout the day. Last year’s crowd approached approximately 1,300 people.

The event is a unique concept in the world of competitive wakeboarding. For each pro rider, there will be three local amateurs. There will be twenty-seven (27) local riders plus nine (9) professional riders giving a total of thirty-six (36) riders. At approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday, the pro riders will select three amateur riders at random to join the pro riders “team.” The teams will compete behind the boats against each other throughout the event. Each rider will be judged against their own skill level thereby giving the new rider and the pro level rider the same opportunity to compete. Again, this event will give amateur riders the opportunity to do something they may never get another chance to do: ride with the sport’s top professionals.

Obviously, a whole day can not be made from just the water activities; there must be “land” events also to keep the event going during the down times of the wake-related activities. As for the dry land portion of the event, the park will be host to a number of events. Most importantly it will be a showcase for the many events sponsors. It will be host to vendor products and will give the event participates the opportunity to get a hands-on look at some of the newest and most interesting products on the market. There will be food vendors and activities such as bounce houses and rock climbing walls. There will be giveaways, raffles and other events (autograph booths, etc.) for those not riding behind or enjoying the pro demos. In addition, there will be a DJ throughout the day.

"We were out the other day to get some 1080’s and some doubles on film,  but the double ups were not consistent all day, we were bogging through every turn and couldn’t keep a consistent  speed through the rollers. One roller came and we were going slow until the last second, and I edged a little harder to get through it to throw a ten, but this is what came out. It was frustrating when the double ups where not coming through to do some tricks I wanted, but you never know what else you will get. No último fim de semana, foi realizada a segunda etapa do ano, na Lagoa do Colosso, em Fortaleza. Na sexta, estive no local para falar com alguns atletas que treinavam. Mas como o evento é basicamente feito entre amigos, eles estão pouco se lixando se a competição vai ter retorno de mídia ou não.

Talvez seja apenas falta de tato ou de educação, mas o que parece é que alguns ali se sentem fazendo um favor para um coitado jornalista, curioso com o esporte que eles praticam. E com a atenção voltada para qualquer coisa, menos para o profissional que está na sua frente pedindo respostas, as respostas saem vagas e quase sem força.

O ponto positivo é que o esporte está sendo difundido. Ossos do ofício.

The park didn't exactly open up recently, its just that I always thought it looked boring. But spending the morning at the park watching Marisa and her friend Eddie (below) made it look both easy AND fun!

It was pretty much at that point that I decided that I wanted to have a go at it as well! It wasn't my first time wakeboarding since Chunnie and I had been a few times before, although all those times we were on a boat.

I wasn't great at wakeboarding but I had managed to get some air... although nothing nearly as impressive as Marisa or Eddie! In fact watching them really reminded me of what I like to do when I go skiing... That is, hit the terrain park and go over all the jumps!! I remember many ski trips were spent just going up and down and up and down the jumps endlessly.

When I did get round to trying SKI360, I went with Marisa who has now become "Coach". She gave me some pointers and off I went on my first round of the park. I reach the first turn and despite the big yank that you get I managed to stay upright and make it round to the second set of turns. I was cruising along (in minimal light - since it was in the evening after work) and I guess I didn't really realize that this turn was much sharper than the previous one. I was just moving along and then BOOM the cable yanked me sideways and I went slamming into the water face first! When I got out of the water I had a bloody nose and felt a little light-headed. All I could think about was "geez, I rushed down here after work, got on the water and didn't even make it one round??? It sure looked easier the other day."

Luckily for me, the bloody nose wasn't anything major, it just took a while to dry up. But I guess that helped me learn because I did manage to make it round the whole park a couple times before collapsing of exhaustion. Isn't that ironic? I can finish a half-ironman but after less than 2 hours of wakeboarding I'm ready to give up!

Anyway, I enjoyed it so much I went back later in the week with some other friends but I think I was actually worse that time! I put it down to the fact that riding Melissa was much better than the rented ones that everybody has to share. And before you jump to any conclusions, Melissa is Marisa's wakeboard that she let me borrow the first time!

Finally, I whip out one of my cameras and took some footage of my friends doing what they do best, rip it on the water!

Peux ceux qui ne savent pas ce qu'est le wakeskate, pour faire rapide, c'est du skateboard sur l'eau, un dérivé du wakeboard mais sans les pieds attachés à la board. Il faut donc des baskets pour ne pas s'arracher la plante des pieds.

Je suis loin d'avoir un super niveau en wakeskate mais voici mon retour sur ces shoes testée la semaine dernière au câble de Cergy.

Les (+):
- shoes super flashy, dopées au technicolor ;
- utlra légères, même mouillées, on peut nager sans soucis, ce ne sont pas des boulets aux pieds ;
- elles accrochent super bien sur les wakeskates ;
- séchage rapide (moins de 12 heures dans mon appart) car matériaux adaptés (mesh et jersey)

Les (-) :
- Pas grand chose pour le moment, juste que la taille 44 n'existe pas dans ce modèle, c'est 43 ou 44.5. J'ai donc eu du 44.5, un peu trop grand, moi qui fait un gros 43.

Prix:
75 euros.

Conclusion:
Une véritable réussite pour la marque Kustom, je n'arrête pas d'en voir au téléski et tout le monde en parle sur les forums dédiés. Ce sont les wakeskates shoes de l'année.

As manobras de kitesurf ao pé das de wakeboard são uma brincadeira de meninas ;) , aqui o barco puxa a grande velocidade e o cabo está quase paralelo á água. Um bom treino ,mas puxadote !

Skaidrs, ka šādā trasē braucējiem no ievainojumiem neizdotos izvairīties. Slovēnis Robert Pokovec treniņbraucienos savainoja plecu, bet tomēr piedalījās sacensībās. Latvijā zināmais Beļģijas braucējs Quentin Delefortrie pavisam skaisti izlīmējās pret betona sienu, nedaudz iekrāsojot kristālskaidro ūdeni sarkanā krāsā. Jāpiezīmē, ka cilvēku upuri nebija vienīgie - iepriekš minētais Pokovec pacentās ar savu veikbordu burtiski nocirst kāda fotoaparāta objektīvu. Fotogrāfs gan apgalvojis, ka pēdējais kadrs esot bijis izcils.

Atgriežoties pie sacensībām - kvalifikācijā katram dalībniekam bija trīs braucieni, no kuriem tika ieskaitīti divi labākie. Tiesneši deva novērtējumu pēc sekojošiem kritērijiem: trases izvēle, triki, stils un agresivitāte. Seši laimīgie finālisti bija: Nico Lerchenfeld, Norbert Vasko, Dominik Gührs, Robert Pokovec, Balász Bakró un Emilio Epstein. Finālā bija jāveic divi braucieni, kas arī tika pilnvērtīgi izmantoti sīvā cīņā.
Pirmo vietu tiesneši piešķīra Nico Lerchenfeld (Vācija), otrajā atstājot Ungāru Balász Bakró, bet trešajā - Vācieti Dominik Gührs.

Robert Pokovec: "Šis ir kaut kas jauns, mēs tā vēl nekad neesam veikojuši. Es piedalījos sagatavošanās procesā no paša sākuma, un palīdzēju izveidot šos objektus. Veikbordistiem bija jāpievērš pilna uzmanība ūdenim, straumēm. Viņiem bija jādomā par daudzām lietām. Un man ir ļoti žēl par fotokameru - mani pārsteidza negaidīts vilnis.
Es patiešām ceru, ka mums izdosies šo pasākumu atkārtot nākamgad. Un, ja mums izdosies, es gribētu redzēt vēl lielākus objektus, lai padarītu visu vēl aizraujošāku!"

Čempions Nico Lerchenfeld arī bija ļoti apmierināts ar rezultātu: "Es patiešām ceru, ka šis pasākums tiks atkārtots nākamgad. Es piedalos! Lieliska organizēšana, burvīgi cilvēki, un skaistas meitenes!"

This photo immediately jumped out and grabbed my attention. I think what did this was the display of clouds in sky actually. From the first glance, I then moved to inspect the photograph in other ways, from different angles. I think it was a very good idea by the photographer to take the picture with the sunrise in the background, behind the individual wakeboarding. Doing so created more of a silhouette of the person riding behind the boat, which is a neat effect. While sitting and trying to analyze and criticize this photo, I also I really liked how the photographer did not take the picture straight on, leaving the sunrise and the wakeboarder in the middle of the picture. Although if thought about, the picture would be unbalanced, I think that it looks better this way. If I could change one thing about this photo, I would enhance its clarity. If it was taken by a better quality camera I believe it could be better, but in a sense, the inexactness of the photograph ties in with the foggy sunrise which is taking place at the time of day so it still fits well in context.

Alrighty folks, so like I said... School... Blegh.

We had a geometry test today...  Well more like a mini-pop-quiz on proofs and I really cannot get my mind wrapped around the way to think like that!  It is rather annoying, sitting there knowing you are going to fail your quiz anyway, and knowing you STILL Have to do it. =P  Talk about depressing.  ANYWAY.  I had a nervous breakdown halfway through and couldn't finish it.  (I get really emotional about grades)  However, my teacher rocks my socks about stuff like that and he said I could re-do it, or even just finish it on Monday.  Isn't he ah-maz-ing?  Serisouly, he's a cool teacher.

I guess school wasn't all that bad.
We got to have classes outside, which was nifty.  Two classes, anyway.  English---classic init?  We got to sit under a big tree and talk about the book Rebecca, which was Summer reading.
(Ah, summer, how I miss ye.  Come back to me!!! D: D: D: )
And then we had world history class outside, so we reinacted the Spartan life, sort of...  While helping put the track stuff that had gotten blown away in our windstorm I talked about two days ago, maybe?  -doesn't keep count-

But, I'm getting away for the weekend, which is exciting.  I can leave the annoying, angsty life of high school behind and relax on a boat for the weekend.  -is rather excited-
I'll probably go wakeboarding for the last time this summer.  God, I don't want to stop.  Good thing we are getting a cable course up here.  I just need to learn how to do flips and jumps and stuff and I'll be set.  Truth be told I'm a little afraid to be doing stuff like that.  Oh well.  I'm sure I'll be fine. =D 
Before I go to the lake, however, I'm going to go to a dance at a different high school.  I won't be a complete outsider... I'll have some old friends and my boyfriend with me.  -laughs-  Yeah, we'll see how that works out.
Anyway.
I'll talk to everyone on Monday when I make my return!

Red Bull puts on a sic show! Some of the best rail riders in the world arrived to compete on the straight-line cable system from Sesitec. The new cable system provides a continuous ride. Last weekend we had a long night in Orlando, it started with a Red Bull event at Lake Eola, 24 wakeboarders — that were selected by Parks Bonifay — competed in a new type of wakeboarding event. Lake Eola is right in the center of Orlando, Florida. The next generation of top riders took to a new cable system course that included an elevated pool, hand rails and sliders inspired by skate and snow parks. HERE'S VIDEO!

"This system is going to change wakeboarding forever," Bonifay said. "The pull of the rope is so high, it clears the sliders."

Normally, wakeboarders are pulled behind boats.

The field will be whittled to 12 wakeboarders after qualifying, then to eight for the semifinal round. Bonifay, a former X Games champion, and Josh Sanders will automatically advance to the semis.

Bonifay, who is sponsored by Red Bull, selected the competitors. One of them, J.D. Webb, soared over the 30-foot-high fountain at Lake Eola two years ago.

"I think it will be competitive but fun and unique at the same time," Bonifay said. "Everyone is on the same playing field."

The first thing I recommend is to get a wakeboard that is large in size with large fins on the bottom. This will help you steer the wakeboard easily. I would recommend a beginner Hyperlite Wakeboard, because of their light weight. This makes them very easy to handle and maneuver.

The next thing to consider is the length of the rope. You may want to start off with a rope length of as low as 25 feet. This will take you closer to the boat which will make the turns much slower and easier to deal with. As you get better you can lengthen the rope as needed.

When first starting out you will be sitting in the water. Remember to point the board forward to reduce drag in the water. Have the boat start out slowly, instead of just gunning it right from the start. This will get you used to the natural feeling of the drag of the water. As the board starts to rise point it forward, lean back a little, bend your knees, and hold on tight. Once you are up on a plane it only gets easier.
